For many, creativity is a field where humanity can paradigmatically express itself. Scientific and technological discoveries, crafting, advertising, fashion are all fields that require and foster creativity. Yet, it is difficult to deny that when we think of creativity, we associate it mostly with the Arts, and it is to this area that we will limit our exploration of creativity.
The focus of this issue goes beyond human creativity, though. Indeed, we wish to investigate what happens to the notion of creativity when it meets Artificial Intelligence (AI).
This interest can be articulated along different axes. The first one concerns the ontological nature of creativity and how it may change when examined in the context of artificial systems. Closely related to the ontology of creativity is its linguistic aspect and how the meaning of creativity and the way we talk about it are affected by the assumptions that we have regarding the possibility for AI to be creative. It is no secret that the language we use influences the way in which we approach the world. A further articulation of our discussion, thus, will concern the attitude of members of the artworld towards AI on the one side and the public perception of creativity in AI on the other, together with the concepts, motivations and goals that lie behind such frames of mind. Lastly, in the light of the impressive developments made by AI in the last decades, a question naturally arises: Are machines going to replace human creativity or will they collaborate with us?

The topics of the papers might include, but need not to be restricted to:
How do we think and speak of creativity?
- How do the notions of creativity, human intentionality, and machine unpredictability relate to each other?
- Where is creativity located: in the product or in the process?
- What impact does the development of AI-systems for art generation have on the notion of creativity?
- Which linguistic and methodological issues emerge from the consideration of machine creativity?
- Creativity as creation: how do research efforts in artificial life or lines of thought rooted in computationalism relate to the cultural or religious traditions and convictions on life, creation and evolution?
How is machine creativity perceived?
- What is the artworld’s attitude towards a machine used for artistic purposes?
- What is the public reaction in front of a machine that creates art?
- Are we biased against the possibility for machines to be creative?
- The narratives of AI: how are the relations between humans and AI, both in terms of humans creating AI and AI enhancing or even creating humans addressed in the literature and in popular culture?
How can humans creatively collaborate with AI?
- Does machine creativity allow for human-machine collaboration and enhancement, or can it only replace human creativity?
- How can creativity be embodied in machines? And does embodiment enhance the creative potential of machines?
- Which kind of impact do new machine learning techniques have on the temporal and spatial dimensions of artworks?
