Calvino e la filosofia della letteratura

In occasione del centenario dalla nascita di Italo Calvino, con la presente call for papers la rivista «Odradek. Studies in Philosophy of Literature, Aesthetics, and New Media Theories» vorrebbe interrogarsi sul contributo che Italo Calvino ha dato alla riflessione sul rapporto tra filosofia e letteratura.

Nell’attuale dibattito per lo più di matrice analitica che si sofferma sull’intreccio tra filosofia e letteratura si usa distinguere tra la filosofia della letteratura e la filosofia in letteratura (cfr. ad esempio Lamarque, P. 2009: The Philosophy of Literature; Carroll N., Gibson J. 2016, The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Literature). La prima è identificabile con la riflessione filosofica che ha la letteratura come oggetto. La seconda coincide con lo studio della presenza di temi filosofici in letteratura e dello sviluppo di tesi filosofiche attraverso lo stile e i generi letterari tipicamente etichettati come “letteratura”. Calvino è fra quei pensatori la cui opera invita a pensare il genitivo nell’espressione “filosofia della letteratura” sia come soggettivo che come oggettivo.

Occuparsi del suo contributo al dibattito su filosofia e letteratura può significare dunque con una lista non esaustiva:

1. Soffermarsi sul modo in cui Calvino intende il rapporto tra filosofia e letteratura; vi è per esempio il famoso saggio del 1967, Filosofia e letteratura (in Una pietra sopra), in cui Calvino descrive il rapporto tra filosofia e letteratura come una lotta infinita in cui le due contendenti «non devono perdersi di vista ma nemmeno intrattenere rapporti ravvicinati», e in cui c’è sempre alle porte la terza incomoda, la convitata di pietra di questo confronto: la scienza.
2. Indagare il modo in cui Calvino fa filosofia nel fare letteratura, considerando la trattazione di temi filosofici con le forme e i registri tipici della letteratura (si pensi ad esempio alle riflessioni sul rapporto tra l’uomo e l’Universo ne Le cosmicomiche oppure a quelle sul tempo in Ti con zero, o sul nuovo metodo di approccio al mondo e di pensarsi come soggetto che propone il signor Palomar)
3. Studiare il modo in cui Calvino riflette sulla letteratura, elaborando quindi una filosofia della letteratura, o nella sua saggistica, riflettendo sullo stile letterario e sulle categorie che la letteratura del futuro dovrebbe valorizzare (l’esempio più palese sono le Lezioni americane), oppure producendo metaletteratura, quindi nei testi letterari che incorporano la critica letteraria (si pensi a titolo esemplificativo alle riflessioni sul ruolo del lettore in Se una notte d’inverno un viaggiatore)

La call for papers è rivolta a studios* interessat* all’opera di Calvino che provengono da diversi ambiti di studio (italianistica, teoria della letteratura, filosofia teoretica, estetica, filosofia del linguaggio e della mente).

Si chiede di inviare una prima proposta con titolo provvisorio e abstract di non più di 400 parole a Danilo Manca (danilo.manca@unipi.it) entro e non oltre il 15 giugno 2023. Non sarà sottoposto a valutazione ma il curatore potrebbe avanzare delle richieste ad autori e autrici sulla base di una visione d’insieme delle proposte pervenute. La deadline per la consegna del testo definitivo è fissata per il 15 ottobre 2023 (anniversario della nascita di Calvino) e la pubblicazione previa revisione doppio cieco avverrà entro gennaio 2024.  

Calvino and the Philosophy of Literature

On the occasion of the centenary of Italo Calvino’s birth, the journal “Odradek. Studies in Philosophy of Literature, Aesthetics, and New Media Theories” would like to investigate Calvino’s contribution to the reflection on the relation between philosophy and literature. In the current debate, mostly of analytical nature with its focus on the intertwining between philosophy and literature, the philosophy of literature is usually distinguished from ‘philosophy in literature’ (see, for example, Lamarque, P. 2009: The Philosophy of Literature; Carroll N., Gibson J. 2016, The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Literature). The former is identified with the philosophical reflection which has literature as its object, while the latter would coincide with the study of the presence of philosophical topics in literature and of the development of philosophical theses through those styles and literary genres typically regarded as “literature”. Calvino is one of those thinkers whose work invites us to think of the genitive in the expression “philosophy of literature” both as subjective and objective. Therefore, to deal with his contribution to the debate between philosophy and literature can mean, among other things:

1. To examine Calvino’s view on the relationship between philosophy and literature. For example, in his famous essay of 1967, “Philosophy and Literature” (in “Una pietra sopra”), Calvino describes such relation as an infinite struggle in which the two contenders “must not lose sight of each other but neither should they have close relations,” and in which the unwelcome third guest, i.e., science, is always at the door.

• To investigate the way in which Calvino does philosophy through his literary work, thereby considering the assessment of philosophical themes with the typical forms and registers of literature (think, for example, of his reflections on the relationship between man and the Universe in “Le cosmicomiche,” or those on time in “Ti con zero,” or on the new method of approaching the world and conceiving oneself as a subject proposed by Mr. Palomar).

• To study the way in which Calvino reflects on literature, thus elaborating a philosophy of literature, either in his essays, in which a reflection is developed that bears on literary style and the categories which the literature of the future should value (the most obvious example being Lezioni americane. Six Memos for the Next Millennium ), or when he produces meta-literature, that is, literary texts that incorporate literary criticism (think, for example, of his reflections on the role of the reader in Se una notte d’inverno un viaggiatore).

The call for papers is addressed to scholars interested in Calvino’s work coming from different fields of study (Italian studies, literary theory, theoretical philosophy, aesthetics, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind). Please send a preliminary proposal with a provisional title and an abstract of no more than 400 words to Danilo Manca (danilo.manca@unipi.it) no later than June 15, 2023. It will not be subject to evaluation, but the authors might be requested to make changes based on an overview of the proposals received. The deadline for submitting the final text is October 15, 2023 (Calvino’s anniversary). After a double-blind peer-review process, the publication is expected to take place no later than January 2024.
